Over the last 15 years, Kumera has delivered around 20 gearboxes to Transnet National Ports Authority in South Africa. Their recent historical order of nine new Voith Water Tractors (VWT) has resulted in a new large order for Kumera Norgear through our customer CounterFire/Stang. The tugs will be used at several ports across South Africa, and will be built by South African Shipyards in Durban.

Eight of the tugs will be identical in construction with a length of 31 meters, a beam of 12.5 meters and a bollard pull of 70 tons. The VWTs will be utilized for harbour towage in the ports of Saldanha Bay, Port Elisabeth, Durban and Richard’s Bay. The ninth VWT will achieve a bollard pull of more than 100 tons – one of the strongest tugs ever equipped.

Their mission is to ensure that customers and business partners reach new levels of operational safety and efficiency in handling of maritime assets, and offer customers unique insights in terms of “designing” for maximum safety and reliability.

– Offering a detailed knowledge and understanding of the safety critical sub-systems of fire-fighting, towing winches and propulsion, Integrated Ship Handling play an important role in ensuring that maritime assets are protected against threats such as on-board or shore based fires. In all cases, vessel maneuverability, fast reaction time and system reliability are not negotiable. Already well proven in South Africa, renowned for its harsh maritime environment, Kumera AS offer the logical choice of integrated fire pump, propulsion gearboxes and clutches, meeting very demanding local market and application criteria, says Graham Russell, MD of Integrated Ship Handling.

Utilizing the local market knowledge, Kumera may operate close to a true global footprint and will be able to sell our products and services in far away locations like South Africa. It is also important to us to define our innovations and developments based on the market knowledge provided by the agent network. For customers, a partnership like this is truly beneficial, as the partner knows Kumera’s products and services, and can serve them locally, says Per Arne Haug, MD Kumera Norgear.

Offering localised technical and after-sales service and support for the installed base of Kumera gearboxes is one of the prime roles of Integrated Ship Handling, as well as enhancing system reliability and availability for our customers. The build-up of local support capabilities is well aligned with initiatives designed to build skills, and increase employment levels in South Africa’s maritime sector.

–We are delighted to cooperate with Kumera, and believe that the strong development of rail and port corridors in sub-Saharan Africa, the value proposition offered by Kumera and our integrated system approach will mean that numerous projects will be achieved together, concludes Russell.
